Two prison inmates in American Samoa have suffered electric shock in a work accident.

The men from the Territorial Correctional Facility in Pago Pago were released from the LBJ hospital after a 24-hour observation by doctors.

The police commissioner William Haleck says the inmates were working with police at the Tafuna West police substation, and were raising flags when the flag pole fell on a live electrical wire, electrocuting both men.

Mr Haleck said his department will take precautionary actions to ensure that this incident will not occur again.
