CNMI public sector faces budget cuts

12:48 pm on 10 April 2013

The Northern Marianas House Committee on cost-cutting is looking at 10-percent across-the-board budget cuts or letting agencies decide where to cut.

The meeting comes as the House Committee on Revenue Generation discusses ideas such as support for a Saipan casino bill and enforcement of tax laws.

Both panels are trying to find ways of pumping more money into the NMI Retirement Fund to prolong its lifespan beyond next March.

The chairman of the cost-cutting panel, Representative Ralph Yumul, says the two main options will have to be voted on by all committee members.

However, there was no final decision because four of nine members were absent.
