Large scale marine protection across the Pacific is the focus of this week's visit to New Zealand by scientists, business leaders and others from Rapa Nui, French Polynesia and Chile.

The Pew Environment Group is hosting the delegation, which also includes members of indigenous communities and government agencies.

Bronwen Golder, the director of Pew's Kermadec Initiative, says New Zealand is a world leader in engagement and partnership around marine conservation proposals and the perfect place to hold discussions on the subject.

She says New Zealand has significant iwi and community engagement in marine protection consultations, along with strong fisheries management, surveillance and enforcement regimes that are highly regarded by other Pacific Island countries.
