Tuvalu MP takes court action to force by-election

1:54 pm on 2 April 2013

The opposition in Tuvalu is taking a case to the High Court to try and force the government to hold a by-election for the vacant seat of Nukufetau.

The Government says lawyers are still working on the details for the by-election.

But an opposition MP, Taukelina Finikaso says the seat has been vacant for four months and the last time Tuvalu had a by-election, in 2011, the whole process only took four weeks.

He believes the Prime Minister, Willie Telavi, is stalling because he fears losing his parliamentary majority.

Mr Finikaso says Parliament has not sat since December.

"We sincerely hope that we can get this by-election underway so that Parliament can meet and we can set the course properly for Tuvalu. We are a country of minimal resources and we can not afford to be like this."
