Fiji's Bainimarama calls for Chaudhry to be honest

3:13 pm on 26 March 2013

Fiji's prime minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama has called on the former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry to be honest about his intentions for next year's elections.

The Fiji Sun reports that Commodore Bainimarama wants Mr Chaudhry to reveal whether he is in elections for political gain or to build a better Fiji.

He was responding to Mr Chaudhry's condemnation of the regime's draft constitution announced last week.

The former prime minister's Labour Party is still awaiting re-registration as the regime blames political party fraud allegations for the need to can plans for a Constituent Assembly which would have debated the draft.

The regime now wants people to give their views directly to the government.

The report quotes Commodore Bainimarama as saying submissions on the draft that best help build a better Fiji will be looked at.
