NZ foreign minister says signs from Fiji less encouraging

The New Zealand foreign minister, Murray McCully, says there have been less encouraging signs out of Fiji this year after the regime changed its own constitution consultation process.

Last week, the Fiji government reneged on its own decree to form a Constituent Assembly to debate a draft constitution, which is to replace the one it dumped four years ago.

Mr McCully says the Fiji regime has been trying to build confidence around elections in 2014, but it has made missteps.

"By departing from their own process, the regime have made it more difficult to engender international respect for the elections being free and fair."
