Solomon Islands teachers threaten to strike on Friday

3:22 pm on 21 March 2013

The Solomon Islands National Teachers' Association will be meeting this afternoon to discuss whether its members will strike tomorrow.

The SINTA President, Samson Faisi, says the union has been warning for weeks that if relevelling dues were not paid on time teachers will strike for the second time this year.

He says the union had given a deadline of noon today for the money to be paid.

Mr Faisi says the government has not taken SINTA's threats seriously and the union wants to send it a clear message.

"There seems to be a negligence on the part of the government to address this issue. As SINTA we saw this as a big slap on the face to teachers."
