O'Neill rules out casino in PNG

The Papua New Guinea prime minister, Peter O'Neill, says there will be no casino built in Port Moresby under his watch as the chief executive of the nation.

Mr O'Neill has told the Post Courier newspaper that he wants to see Papua New Guineans develop a savings culture because the benefits are immense.

The comment comes after the chair of a landowner company in the Southern Highlands, which has received millions of dollars in royalties from the Gobe oil project, said he wanted a casino up and running as soon as possible.

Mr O'Neill says gambling is a waste of time and money.

He says when Papua New Guineans gamble, they are throwing away money that can be better utilised through savings.
