Ten mariners have been rescued after a canoe they were sailing in sank while between Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia.

The group was rescued by the United States Coast Guard Guam in coordination with Palau's Division of Maritime Law Enforcement and the Royal Australian Navy Maritime Surveillance Advisor.

The seamen, who include students from the Palau Community College, and Japanese and American citizens, were traveling on a 60-foot traditional sailing canoe from Palau to the outer islands of Yap State.

They called for help via sattellite telephone early Monday morning when the vessel began breaking and sinking.

The group was found in the Philippine Sea 170 kilometres northeast of Palau.
