The Solomon Islands government's efforts to ensure fair elections and improve the effectiveness of Parliament has been boosted with the signing of assistance funding from the UNDP worth over 8.9 million US dollars.
The deputy prime minister, Manasseh Maelanga, welcomed the United Nations Development Programme's project saying it's timely as the government, particularly, the Electoral Commission or SIEC is making vital preparations ahead of the 2014 national general elections.
The project will run until 2015 in a partnership also with the European Union and a planned partnership with AusAID.
Mr Maelanga said the project will also focus on ensuring the design and implementation of more efficient and effective administrative procedures through capacity building of SIEC.
The project will also help strengthen the legal capacity of the SIEC, aiming at supporting electoral and legal reform.
