New Zealand and Solomon Islands look to strengthen links

7:35 pm on 28 February 2013

The Solomon Islands Foreign Minister, Clay Forau, is in New Zealand for talks that will cover the drawing down of the Regional Assistance Mission or RAMSI.

RAMSI will have been in Solomon Islands for ten years by this July and the military element is being phased out this year.

New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully says this country's aid assistance for the Solomons will now focus on economic growth through the development of critical infrastructure, fisheries, business, education, policing, and law and justice.

He says they will also look at the strengthening of economic ties, the Recognised Employer Scheme and how New Zealand can further assist the recovery from the recent earthquake and tsunami in Temotu Province.
