Qarase back in Fiji court in another abuse of office case

A former Fiji Prime Minister and Chairman of Native Land Trust Board, Laisenia Qarase, was again in court today to face charges in relation to alleged fraudulent conversion and abuse of office.

Qarase is currently serving 12 months on separate charges relating to abuse of office, and is appealing against that conviction.

Qarase is charged with the former NLTB General Manager Kalivati Bakani and a former NLTB Director Keni Dakuidreketi.

Fiji Village reports it is alleged that the three were involved in having caused or fraudulently applied the Extinct Mataqali Funds to two seperate companies, contrary to the purposes and role of the NLTB and also contrary to the purpose of Vanua Development Corporation Limited.

The three are charged with four counts of fraudulent conversion and three counts of abuse of office.

The case has been adjourned to June the 26th.
