Former PNG military chief welcomes government approach on border issue

7:40 pm on 21 February 2013

A former head of Papua New Guinea's Defence Force says the Prime Minister Peter O'Neill is displaying strong leadership on resolving issues about the border shared with Indonesia.

PNG's cabinet has ordered a deployment of troops to patrol the border, following tensions in the border between PNG citizens and Indonesia's military.

Major General Jerry Singirok says the tensions highlight the poor management of the border by PNG authorities over many years.

Peter O'Neill has voiced concern about what he calls continuous harassment of PNG citizens by Indonesia's military.

Major General Singirok says the Prime Minister is right to speak frankly on the issue.

"His statement alone has triggered off a series of diplomatic and bureaucratic processes that will ensure that in the not too distant future positive outcomes (are reached) on behalf of PNG authority."
