Solomons' Guadalcanal assembly to choose new provincial premier

1:03 pm on 21 February 2013

A former Solomon Islands national politician and a former premier are competing to become the new premier of Guadalcanal.

An election is being held in the provincial assembly in Honiara tomorrow.

A former cabinet minister, Walton Naezon, is lining up against Steve Panga, who is a previous Guadalcanal premier.

Mr Naezon claims he has the backing of 12 of the 21 members.

Earlier this week, the sitting premier, Anthony Veke, resigned amid allegations he had misused public funds.
