The former principal of Samoana High School in American Samoa has been sentenced to serve 100 hours of community service.

Simon Mageo was initially charged with two counts of third degree assault and two charges of endangering the welfare of a child for allegedly assaulting a student last year.

Under a plea agreement with the government, Mageo pleaded guilty third degree assault while the other charges were dismissed.

Besides community service, Samoa News reports that Mageo was also ordered by the court to write up a comprehensive plan to create a programme to prevent violence against students within the school.

Court documents show a student reported to police that he was hit on the back of his neck twice last year by Mageo after seeking an admit slip because he was absent from school the previous day.
