The publisher of the Solomon Star says the newspaper has filed a criminal case against the Prime Minister's wife after staff were allegedly intimidated and threatened with extortion.
Catherine Lamani says the demands for compensation came after the paper ran a letter from the PM's lawyer warning media not to print allegations of the leader's extra maritial affair.
She says threats to staff after hours came from a group who said they were sent by Gordon Darcy Lilo's wife Bronwyn.
Ms Lamani says she's taken the action reluctantly but the culture of demanding money from the press must be stopped.
"The newspaper has to fight for its rights, and that is, we have to stand for truth. We want to inform the people of Solomon Islands what our rights are. And our right is for media freedom in the Islands."
Catherine Lamani says she wrote to Police Commissioner john Lansley yesterday and the case is now with the National Criminal Investigation Department.
