Search for more science teachers in Samoa

The Ministry of Education in Samoa is on the hunt for science teachers to fill a shortage at colleges run by the Catholic Church.

The Director of Catholic Education says two science teachers are required for each of their five colleges, however only one has been hired since the school year began last week.

Aeau Chris Hazelman says a drop in the number of clergy in general has removed a source of science teachers in the past and he says Catholic schools are desperate to fill the void.

Mr Hazelman says the shortage is a huge problem at secondary schools nationwide.

He says the lack of teachers dates back ten years and has been only temporarily resolved through tapping into a network of ex-students, volunteers and public servants to teach science part-time.
