Fiji's regime keen to modernise sugar industry

Efforts by Fiji's interim government to modernise the sugar industry is expected to generate an extra 11 million US dollars into the economy this year.

The Ministry of Information says through the investment in equipment to assist farmers cultivate and harvest their cane, practical steps are being taken to restore the country's sugar industry.

The interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama says costs will be reduced and an increase in efficiency and sugar production can be expected.

Commodore Bainimarama says the government is determined to modernise the sugar industry so it becomes viable and sustainable.
