Former MP chides Solomons government over teacher pay row

5:18 pm on 25 January 2013

A former Solomon Islands parliamentaran has condemned the Prime Minister for failing to pay teachers' their backdated salaries in this year's budget.

Yukio Sato, who was the MP for West Honiara between 2001 and 2006, says the authorities responsible for compiling the budget are useless because they have failed to include teacher's claims to their pay in the budget.

Teachers have been involved in a dispute which has led to the start of the school year being delayed by a week.

Schools are expected to open their doors on Monday if the government and the National Teachers Association can reach an agreement.

The Ministry of Finance says back-dating the salaries will cost the Solomon Islands more than five million US dollars.
