Fiji employers to stay out of formal politics

4:10 pm on 23 January 2013

Fiji's Commerce and Employer Federation says it has no intention of forming a political party ahead of next year's election.

Under the recently released Political Parties Decree, along with trade unionists, elected or appointed officers of federations, congresses or council of employers may not join political parties.

The Federation says its position remains very clear, and it continues to be apolitical.

It says its role is to represent wider business interests to the government of the day and it will continue to abide by the laws of Fiji, and this includes the new Political Parties Decree.

A statement from the organisation says the board and secretariat staff have no intention of forming a political party nor do they have intentions of putting their names forward as candidates whilst involved with the federation.
