The Port Vila Municipal Council in Vanuatu is assuring residents it is doing its best to complete rubbish collections as soon as possible.

Two out of six of the Council's rubbish trucks have broken down and the Council has not been able to complete rubbish collections in parts of the central business district and some residential areas for several weeks.

The Town Clerk Mandes Tangaras says the Council is hoping to contract private waste disposal businesses and truck companies to help pick up the rubbish.

"We are now putting emphasis on those areas to collect the rubbish from those areas. And the residential areas we are now talking with private collectors to assist us to collect it. And the Council will assist, will sort them out later on."

Mandes Tangaras says he is aware of complaints about rubbish not being picked up but assures the public the Council is doing its best.
