A French-led aid mission will be sent from New Caledonia to Fiji today to help cope with the aftermath of Cyclone Evan.

This comes after Fiji appealed for further international assistance to deal with the destruction in the west and north of the country.

A French Casa plane will fly a rescue unit and three tonnes of supply to the north of Fiji, including a water treatment unit capable of producing 5,000 litres of drinking water a day.

The mission is a joint effort of France, New Caledonia and its provinces including their respective Red Cross chapters.
