Sport: Fiji women's team join men in securing Hockey World League spot

11:20 am on 14 December 2012

The Fiji women's hockey team joined their male counterparts in qualifying for the second round of the World League tournament, after thrashing Samoa 14-1 in their final round robin match on Thursday.

The hosts have dominated their Pacific rivals throughout the week, scoring 43 goals in three matches for just two conceded.

Both the men's and women's Fiji teams are unbeaten in both the World League and Oceania Pacific Cup competitions and will meet Papua New Guinea on Friday in their respective World League gold medal playoff games.

The men's coach Hector Smith says they want to keep their run going.

"We really need to finish on a strong note because it will be a good backing that we take with us when we try to step up to the likes of India and Malaysia, just to name a few, and also too we've got the New Zealand Barbarians towards the end of Janyuary as a build up match."

We are anxious to play in this tournament and we hope to not only represent out country well but the Island nations and to help the profile of this sport grow.

Following today's World League playoff matches, the Oceania Pacific Cup finals will be decided on Saturday.
