New Zealand called on to re-engage over Kyoto

2:36 pm on 7 December 2012

The opposition New Zealand Green Party says the National Government should listen to criticism at the climate change talks in Doha and sign up to binding commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Its climate change spokesperson Kennedy Graham says New Zealand is letting down its Pacific neighbours and other small island states by refusing to continue with binding commitments under the Kyoto Protocol.

Mr Graham says the Alliance of Small Island States, or AOSIS, says it deeply regrets the decision by few developed countries who had decided not to continue.

He says it is not too late to reverse this position and announce New Zealand will join the Europeans and take on a second commitment, just as Australia is doing.
