CNMI House determined to oust governor

4:59 pm on 9 November 2012

A re-elected member of the Northern Marianas House of Representatives Joseph Guerrero says the public has overwhelmingly expressed its dissatisfaction with the governor who last month survived an impeachment bid.

Mr Guerrero says the fact that 16 pro-impeachment candidates were voted into the 20-seat legislature shows there is a clear mandate to remove the governor, Benigno Fitial.

Mr Guerrero says the governor should resign now or be impeached in January when the new House meets.

"There is no question of what is going to happen. We have to remove the governor. It's not about politics, he's beens saying all along that we were doing this because it was campaign season. The timing may have been suspicious but there were things that happened that led us to push for it, we could not wait."

Governer Fitial, who was not up for re-election, says the impeachment proceedings are nothing more than a political ploy.
