Two Iranian asylum-seekers have been charged over their alleged involvement in a riot on Nauru.

The newspaper, The Australian, reports the two men are accused of being involved in a protest that damaged light bulbs and kitchen equipment at the Australian run asylum-seeker camp in September.

It says the two are the first of 17 identified persons of interest to be charged.

The accused will appear in court on Nauru later this month.

Meanwhile, the Australian Immigration Minister, Chris Bowen, has refused to say if the charges will affect the visa applications of the asylum-seekers.
