New Victim Support Unit in Tonga's capital

3:55 pm on 2 November 2012

Tonga police have opened a new victim support unit at the central police station in the capital, Nuku'alofa.

The Matangi Tonga website reports Detective Penisimani Sili saying the new unit will provide a safe place for victims to lodge complaints and be interviewed by police officers in private.

He says it is high time the unit was set up because although the domestic violence unit has its own interview room, other crimes are usually dealt with at the station's front desk.

The Police Commissioner Grant O'Fee says sometimes police officers forget that victims of crimes are the most important people and it is essential that officers treat them with care and respect, like members of their own family.

Commissioner O'Fee says if they do that 80 percent of complaints will disappear.

The two-room unit was funded under the Tonga Police Tripartite Programme between Tonga, Australia and New Zealand.
