US$15m Solomons road and bridging project completed on Guadalcanal

The premier of Guadalcanal says the completion of a 15 million US dollar road and bridging project west of the Solomon Islands capital Honiara means people in outlying communities will be able to access services without staying in the city.

Anthony Veke says the project involved rehabilitating the sealed road from White River, on the outskirts of Honiara, sealing the road between Doma and Selwyn College and building bridges along the entire stretch.

Mr Veke says the Asian Development Bank, Australia and New Zealand helped the central government pay for the new roading and bridges, which he opened yesterday.

"Because of this infrastructure it helps the community to remain at home because accessing services would just take a few minutes' drive from the villages so no one would like to come to Honiara to spend a day to access these services because you can just live at home."

Anthony Veke says bus services are also being extended along the road.
