Thirteen people have been arrested in the Solomon Islands town of Gizo, after police reinforcements were sent to deal with civil disturbances between two groups over the weekend.

Last week, police in Gizo arrested a suspect for the several stabbings.

As a result of this incident, tensions have remained high in the province.

Late Friday night a group of men attacked the Gizo Police Station and caused damage to the nearby market area.

The SIBC reports police, along with the RAMSI Participating Police Force, were deployed to Gizo to assist the local police in restoring security within the area.
