Lasike challenges removal as Tonga Speaker

Tonga's Lord Lasike is to challenge his removal as Speaker and member of Parliament.

Lord Lasike was convicted in July of possessing ammunition without a licence.

A week later King Tupou the 6th removed him as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and he lost his seat in parliament.

But today the Court of Appeal overturned the conviction.

Lord Lasike says he will write to the Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano, pointing out that he believes his removal from parliament was illegal.

He says when his chairmanship was revoked the wrong legislation was used.

"They had a by election and they chose a guy to take over my seat but I think they should have waited a little bit until my appeal case finishes and then from there they should make their decision, or otherwise they should have had an interim Speaker."
