1:51 pm on 5 October 2012

All schools in Samoa are on holiday today to celebrate World Teachers Day.

This week schools throughout the country have been holding activities to mark the special contribution made by teachers.

An exhibition has been held to showcase the services rendered by the teaching profession to the government.

Among those featured was Iokapeta Petaia who was the first matron at the Samoa College hostel when it first opened its doors in 1962 .

Mrs Petaia, who is now 88, retired in 1982.

The celebration for teachers culminates in a parade this afternoon and a ball tonight.
