Assessment of Solomon Islands jail wanted after two prisoners die

1:31 pm on 27 September 2012

The Solomon Islands Correctional Service has requested medical authorities to carry out an assessment of the Auki prison in Malaita Province.

The prison in Auki is only three years old and was funded by the Australian government.

The prisons commissioner, Francis Haisoma confirmed the request follows the recent deaths of two inmates.

However he clarified the two men were on remand and died at different times and separate cells.

He says they both died at the Kilufi hospital.
