Sport: Last minute try denies Kumuls

A last minute try to Akuila Uate gave the Australian Prime Minister's XIII a narrow 24-18 victory over Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby yesterday.

The Kumuls had fought back from a 12-0 deficit midway through the first half to tie the scores at 18 all, before Uate latched onto the end of a crossfield kick from Penrith stand-off Lachlan Coote for the match-winner.

The drama started well before kick-off, however, when a projectile aimed at police was answered by officers and military security personnel.

When people didn't scatter fast enough, coke cans were snatched from road-side sellers and hurled at them, with one security officer attempting to stop media filming the incident, explaining that such methods of crowd control would be misunderstood.
