CNMI leader calls joint leadership meeting to tackle critical issues

The Northern Marianas Governor, Benigno Fitial, who is the subject of an impeachment motion, is planning a joint leadership meeting next week.

He told the Legislature on Monday that among issues he wants discussed are the needs of the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation and the Retirement Fund.

But the Senate President Paul Manglona and other lawmakers says the priority should be the budget for the coming year to avoid another government shutdown.

A Special Committee on Impeachment is now reviewing the 16 articles of impeachment against the Governor.

Mr Fitial says removing him from office won't solve the CNMI's problems, such as the high costs of utilities.
