The Papua New Guinea National Executive Council has approved 6 point 4 million US dollars in emergency spending to restore roads and bridges washed away by floods in Southern Highlands Province.

The acting Prime Minister Leo Dion says an additional quarter of a million dollars has been allocated for immediate humanitarian relief.

He says continuous rain over the past few weeks has washed away roads and bridges leaving many people cut off from vital Government services for more than a week.

At least 4 key bridges have been washed away.

Mr Dion says the Government wants the Works Department in Mendi to immediately identify and implement permanent solutions on the affected roads.
