PNG political parties called on to submit election expenses

3:11 pm on 13 September 2012

Papua New Guinea's Registrar of Political Parties and Candidates says political parties and winning candidates have been told to submit their expenses from the recent election to his office.

Dr Alphonse Gelu says currently no major parties have submitted their campaign finances returns but that they are required to do so.

"The deadline for submission of their election expenses is November 1st. And under the Organic Law there are penalties this office can impose on political parties and candidates that do not submit their returns."

Meanwhile, Dr Alphonse Gelu says his and other government agencies have produced a draft revised Organic Law on the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates

He says parliament will be asked to revisit provisions that were cut from the Organic Law following a Supreme Court ruling two years ago.
