Oceania football champions Tahiti have been dealt a blow in their bid to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, after a 4-nil drubbing at the hands of New Caledonia last night.
Both teams went into the francophone derby desperate for victory, having lost their opening round match.
It took 57 minutes to break the deadlock when midfielder Cesar Lolohea's 30 yard effort struck the post and found its way in off veteran keeper Xavier Samin.
Lolohea then turned provider - picking out Bertrand Kai in the 60th minute and then the head of Georges Gope-Fenepej two minutes later.
The visitors then sealed the result with a fourth to Gope-Fenepej in the dying moments.
New Caledonia coach Alain Moizan says the win is pleasing and keeps them in the hunt to finish top of the group, while Tahiti's Eddy Etaeta admits their chances of progressing to the next stage are very slim.
New Zealand lead the Oceania group with the maximum 6 points after two matches, with New Caledonia and Solomon Islands on three points and Tahiti still winless.
