The American Samoa Department of Human and Social Services is negotiating with the US Department of Agriculture to change the eligibility requirements for food stamp benefits.
The Food Stamp programme issues monthly food vouchers for low income senior citizens, and blind and disabled people in American Samoa.
The amounts range from 64 to 160 US dollars a month depending on income level.
Just over 4 thousand people are currently receiving food stamp benefits.
But the director of the Department of Human and Social Services Leilua Stevenson said it wants to lower the gross monthly income level so that more people will be eligible for the assistance.
"If approved the gross monthly eligibility level will more from 1,008 to 1,227 dollars, allowing more people to qualify."
