CNMI eyed as regional airline hub

The Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands says he wants the CNMI to become a regional airline hub to revive the local economy.

Benigno Fitial shared his plan during a meeting with lawmakers on Tuesday.

One lawmaker who attended the meeting says Fitial is considering including airlines in a qualifying certificate programme.

The Governor's Press secretary, Angel Demapan, says the CNMI becoming a regional airline hub would both stimulate the local economy and create new jobs for residents.

But he says to achieve the vision, the governor would like to work with the Legislature to come up with innovative ways, such as the qualifying certificate programme, to provide attractive incentives to commercial airlines.
