China and New Zealand are working together to help the Cook Islands improve the water systems on Rarotonga.

New Zealand is to provide nearly 12 million US dollars in aid for the project while China will loan about 25 million US dollars for the 48 million dollar project.

In a joint announcement in the Cook Islands the New Zealand Prime Minister John Key says the project aims to improve the island's water and sanitation infrastructure and builds on work already done to improve the water quality of Muri lagoon.
