Fiji signs MOU with North Korea at Non Aligned Movement in Iran

4:26 am on 31 August 2012

Fiji's interim regime is to sign a memorandum of understanding with North Korea at the meeting of the Non Aligned Movement in Iran.

The agreement is part of the Bainimarama government's stated aim to engage with all members of the international community and will be signed at the margins of the five day gathering in Tehran which ends today.

The Fiji government in a statement says the MOU will set the foundation for more bilateral consultation and exchanges of views on politics, economic development and culture.

The statement says both countries share common interests with respect to sovereignty and independence and the deal complements Fiji's Look North foreign policy as it moves away from its traditional bilateral partners.

Fiji has already opened a diplomatic post in North Korea.

Earlier this week it declared the start of formal diplomatic ties with Iran.
