Taiwan man appears in court in CNMI connection with "birth tourism"

A Taiwan citizen has appeared in court in the Northern Marianas on allegations of involvement in so-called birth tourism.

Kuan Yi Chen who is a resident of Saipan was arrested on Saturday.

He was detained on criminal charges including one count of harbouring illegal aliens and two counts of enticing the illegal entry of aliens.

The 39 year old is alleged to have been involved in recruiting and facilitating travel, housing and other services for Chinese citizens who travel to Saipan for the purpose of giving birth to U.S. citizen children.

Kuan Yi Chen is alleged to have provided consultation services to Chinese families for a fee, knowing they'd be misrepresenting their intentions for entering the territory.
