Portable power station on show at Forum summit in Cook Islands

A portable power station has cleared customs in the Cook Islands in preparation for a 'green energy barbeque' during the Pacific Islands Forum summit next week.

New Zealand technicians are installing photovoltaic panels and a wind generator to prepare the so-called green energy pod for its debut performance on Rarotonga.

They are aiming to give the pod enough time to produce and store hydrogen so it can fuel a barbeque the leaders.

Executives from ESG Energy say the pod is an opportunity for the prime minister Henry Puna to show visitors how he can wean the Cook Islands off fossil fuels by 2020.
