Nauru police expect Australian Federal Police to join them in providing security around the planned asylum seeker processing centre on the island.
Officials from Australia and Nauru have been discussing arrangements for the reopening of a detention facility on Nauru after Canberra last week passed legislation to revisit the policy of offshore refugee processing.
The centre could be open within weeks as Australia's government looks to stem ongoing arrivals of boats carrying asylum seekers trying to reach the mainland.
Nauru's acting police chief Simpson Deidenang says he hopes Australian Federal Police will again assist in providing security at the centre.
"The last time there were twenty or thirty AFP officers who were hosted not within the camp but outside the camp, same with our police officers."
