MSG and New Caledonia Congress strengthen ties

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed in New Caledonia between the territory's Congress and the Melanesian Spearhead Group.

This week's signing in New Caledonia will pave the way for the Congress to fund a Kanak to work at the MSG Secretariat in Port Vila.

The MSG delegation met political leaders during its four-day tour evaluating the territory's progress in implementing the Noumea Accord.

The Accord is to pave the way for a possible independence referendum as part of the territory's decolonisation process.

The visit was originally planned for early last month but was deferred amid objections to the delegation being led by the MSG chair, the Fiji regime leader Commodore Frank Bainimarama.
