Samoa boxer in conditional detention in American Samoa

1:53 pm on 13 August 2012

A boxer from Samoa, Faamanu Aukuso, has been sentenced to 28 months in jail and placed on probation for seven years in American Samoa after being convicted on charges of having sex with a minor.

The detention period however will be stayed if Fa'amanu leaves the territory immediately.

He will remain in jail until his fare is paid and he is driven to either the airport or wharf.

Fa'amanu has been behind bars since November.

He travelled to American Samoa with the Samoa Amateur Boxing Club to take part in the Mosooi Festival.

He asked the court to send him back to Samoa so he can take care of his family.

The American Samoa Boxing Association is to pay for his fare to Samoa.
