American Samoa still awaiting 2008 Pacific Arts Festival Report

Four years after the event, the American Samoa Fono is still to receive an official report of the 2008 Pacific Arts Festival which ran well over budget.

More questions have surfaced during the Senate Investigating Committee hearing about government funds spent on the event.

A Fono staff report on the 20 million US dollar Retirement Fund loan showed that the total amount spent on the Festival was 3.6 million US dollars.

This includes expenditure that had not been approved.

For example large amounts went to the 2009 Samoan Heritage Week in Hawaii and the 2008 Miss South Pacific Pageant which the territory hosted.

The Treasurer, Magalei Logovii, told the Committee he only became involved with festival finances after the event when many local vendors complained that they had not been paid.

He says at the governor's request he stepped in to handle the festival payments, and at that time all of the money given to the Festival Committee, both government funds and private donations, had run out.
