American Samoa citizenship advocate irked by Togiola talk

6:39 pm on 25 July 2012

A plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging a Federal law that denies US citizenship to people born in American Samoa says Governor Togiola Tulafono has got the intention of the lawsuit wrong.

Leneuoti Tuaua is the main plaintiff in the lawsuit filed about two weeks ago in federal court.

Governor Togiola had said on his radio programme that the suit was an act without love and was driven by attorneys.

He also accused the plaintiffs of misleading the public into thinking if they were granted US citizenship they can vote for US President.

Tuaua says he respects the governor's position but feels Togiola governor went too far.

"We did not ask to become citizens because we want to vote for the President of the United States, it's not want we want to do. We are not trying to leave the Territory on the aside, we are merely taking one step, that's all."
