Carr raises Papua issues in Indonesia talks

2:23 pm on 17 July 2012

The Australian Foreign Minister, Bob Carr, has reportedly raised sensitive issues on alleged human rights abuses and violence in Papua during a meeting with his Indonesian counterpart, Marty Natalegawa.

The Jakarta Post reports Mr Natalegawa as saying Mr Carr told him Australia wanted the Indonesian government to promote transparency in matters concerning Papua.

But he says the Australian foreign minister also reiterated Canberra's position that it recognises Indonesia's territorial integrity.

Mr Carr has told media that his government is quietly working with the Indonesians to see that reasonable standards of human rights protection are maintained.
