Sport: Palau have high hopes for London-bound weightlifter

Palau will send five athletes to the London Olympics later this month, matching their contingent in Beijing four years ago.

Among the group are two track athletes, one swimmer, one judoka and weightlifter Stevick Patris.

Stevick is the son of the former Palau Weightlifting President Steve Patris, who passed away last year.

The Chef de Mission for Palau in London, Bill Keldermans, says Patris has a lot of promise.

"He's still very young and we weren't really expecting him to be going to this Olympics but since he did alright in the Oceania tournament he got a wildcard to go. His coaches keep telling me that he has some real possibilities for the 2016 Olympics to maybe be the first medals for Palau in the Olympics, but he didn't think he'd be anywhere near ready this time but it's good if he can go just for the experience."
